Linachtalsperre

VöhrenbachSüdschwarzwald

Germany's only multiple-arch dam with a sloping water face – the only second structure of its kind in Europe stands in eastern Belgium.

Built from 1922 with up to 500 recruited workers, because Vöhrenbach wanted to free itself from unreliable electricity suppliers; in operation from 1925 and left to decay in 1969. Restored between 2006 and 2007 for 7.1 million euros, it has generated power again ever since. The crest of the dam and the hydropower trail around the reservoir are open to walkers; the town arranges guided tours of the power station building.
