No photo – good light comes when it feels like it.

The Wilde Michel is an old farm in Linach, part of Furtwangen in the Central Black Forest, about five minutes by car from the Linach dam. I have it in the guide because of the campsite: every pitch has water and electricity, and if you arrive with a tent on foot, by bike or alone on a motorbike, the house says there is always a spot for you. Winter camping is possible for most of the season.

If you have no tent of your own, you sleep in one of the two bubble tents with an electric blanket and a view of the pond, in the rooftop-tent village on wooden platforms on the south-facing slope, or in a Viking tent. There are also holiday flats and apartments in the house. Altogether around 120 people can stay overnight.

The inn is mainly a weekend affair; Monday and Tuesday are rest days. Meat, trout and eggs come from farms and producers in the area, and the menu has Spätzle, Zwiebelrostbraten, traditional cold platters and vegan dishes too.

There is music in the barn almost every week, from the punk rock weekend and the Heavy Michel Days to the Blechfeschd brass festival, plus cabaret and karaoke. At weekends it can get loud inside until 2 am; outside, quiet time starts at 10 pm.

For quieter hours you can rent the sauna with jacuzzi or the wooden hot tub, and e-mountain bikes are available for tours. Children have a wooden playground, a water playground and a skate ramp, and the Westweg and Wasserweltensteig trails are close by.

Roughly what does it cost?
